How Works with a Financial Comparison

This page is static. Nothing on this page moves, but you can try all these examples out on the Online Examples page.

The best way to explain BURP is with a real life example. This is the Sphinx Creative Center page. It was a standard HTML web page like millions of others. It's owner, Marsha, wanted to be able to update it herself to save money so she had it BURPed.

After a webpage has been BURPed it looks exactly the same as it did before. The whole philosophy of BURP revolves around it's invisibility to the public.

In this example we show a simple page with a Text Editor 1.0 module and a Detail Editor 1.0 module.

To update, open your BURPed webpage on any computer using any standard browser - in this case Netscape Navigator (nothing unusual so far).

The Magic Words

In the address line, type the magic words:

?edit=thispage and hit enter.

You will be prompted for a USERNAME and PASSWORD. This is the standard HTTP protection that comes with all BURP modules and prevents other people from changing your site.

Once you type in your password, you're in BURP mode.

Mode

Now that you're in BURP mode, you'll find your screen has changed. There are white and orange BURP buttons around the page and the text and column headings are editable.

Text Editor 1.0

This is the most commonly and easily used BURP module. Simply change the text on the page by typing or cutting and pasting and click the "Change Text" button. That's it.

You can exit BURP mode at any time by closing the browser or clicking the "Exit BURP" button.

Modules

Also on the page is a button called "Detail Editor 1.0". When clicked, it will open a small window called a popup.

Most of the BURP modules work this way. While BURPing, buttons relevant to updating your page will appear and each one represents a module. In this case it's the Detail Editor where you can change your contact details and office hours.

You probably won't change your Contact Information all that often, but you may want to change your business hours over various holiday periods.

Popup Modules

Detail Editor 1.0

After clicking the button, the popup window appears with all your contact details.

Changing your details is as easy as typing over the top of them and clicking "Change Details". To leave the Detail Editor, close the popup or click "Exit Editor".

That's basically it. You now know all there is to know about BURPing. There are some minor differences with specific modules but it all works in about the same way.
